Today in OiB, I’m thinking about Salt. Salt is one of the most basic ingredients of life. It is the basic unit and also has many different types. It has a lot of varieties and uses as well. The different types are given below:
- Iodized Table Salt
This type is the most known type of all salts as it is used at home in ordinary cooking. It is normally present at the table for sprinkling over foods. The salt is mixed by manufacturers with the iodine mineral which is why it is called as iodized salt. It helps to do away with diseases that are related to iodine deficiencies and lack of iodine through diet as well such as Hypothyroidism, etc. However, the amount should not also be taken in excess as well.
- Sea Salt
As the name indicates, sea water is evaporated to get this type of salt which is made up of crystals that are larger than the normal iodized table salt. The crystals are also rougher in comparison whereas it is extracted in many places all over the world. Fleur de sel or Flower of salt is extracted in the France region through a manual method. It involves scarping of the topmost layer through scraping before it starts sinking at the bottom of the large salt pan. It is just as if the cream is taken above all and is therefore the most expensive salts of all.
The one extracted from the Celtic Sea is known as the Celtic Sea Salt that is extracted using a 2,000-year-old method in Brittany, France.
- Pickling Salt
Pickling is something which adds zest and spice to life. This type of salt has no additives in it and is used to pickle foods as brines. It is because of this no additive technology that the liquid does not come up like in table salt which has additives and anti-caking agent in it.
- Kosher Salt
Kosher salt is so named so because it is normally used when someone is making kosher meat. It has crystals that are rougher as well as bigger besides being irregular in shape. Kosher meat preparation requires driving out all the blood of the animal through cooking first and kosher salt no doubt does that. It is also a choice of many cooks because of its lighter flavor and lesser level of additives too.
- Himalayan Pink Salt
Found within the Himalayan Range, the fossilized salt form the sea is pink because it is truly rich in Iron and more expensive than normal salt as it is healthier and pure as well.
- Black Salt
Black salt is not actually black in color but pinkish grey in color. It is actually a spice found in Southeast Asia in India and has a very strong Sulphur smell. It is also used in the US to give an egg-like flavor to dishes.
Since most of the salt we consume is not pure like Fleur de sel hence it should not be consumed too much as excess of everything is surely bad for all. What do you think of salt and which type you use the most, and why?
