Healing Properties of Cinnamon for your Skin

How many of you are familiar with the spice named “Cinnamon”? I am sure many of you would be nodding your heads, but how many of you actually know that it was once treasured even more than Gold?

Yes, my dear friends you heard it right! In ancient times people valued it to a great deal and if they did so it’s for a reason. The reason behind this vivid belief is that this natural herb comes with umpteen health benefits and in this article, I am going to highlight the major health benefits of this herb.

Cures Diabetes and reduces Cholesterol levels:

According to a latest study by the World Health Organization (WHO) it has been researched that about 250 million people in the world are diabetic.

This data is quite huge and the ailment is popularly known as a silent killer too, and unfortunately there is no cure for this disease, only a healthy lifestyle is the one. But thankfully there are some natural herbs that help in dealing with this illness and Cinnamon is on the top of these.

With the help the blood sugar levels decrease and the resistance to insulin, which is the main reason of this disease is also improved. The doctors suggest taking around 6 grams of Cinnamon every day for best effects! In addition to increasing the insulin levels, this spice is also helpful in lowering the cholesterol levels in the body.

Plus, it has a sweet taste that too with least sugar content in it, which helps the diabetic patients in a great way. One can now pour it into yogurt, milk or tea and enjoy the sweetness without causing any harm over the body.

Mouth Freshener:

Since the ancient times, Cinnamon is being treated as a great mouth freshener and just a pinch of this spice can give you a refreshing breath. In addition to a fresh breathe this is also very helpful for the tooth aches.

If you are suffering from a toothache, then this herb could be a great relief to you, just mix some the powdered cinnamon powder with honey and apply it over the infectious tooth. This would give instant relief to the tooth.

A Fabulous Skincare for Oily Skin

Having Oily Skin can be a real pain ⇒ 8 Easy Step to kill that pain! Especially when you are constantly having bad breakouts. As someone with incredibly oily skin, I can tell you that I have done a lot of research on this in the hope of preventing such breakouts; and now I think I have found a routine that works well for me. I wanted to share this with you in the hope it does the same for you:)

1. Wash your Face

This might seem obvious but it’s surprising how much you can forget to do this sometimes. It’s easy enough to do when you have a shower, but you really should be washing your hair twice a day if you can. This way any build up of oil and dirt accumulated throughout the day can be washed off.

2. Exfoliate

When I was a teen, I didn’t really know what exfoliating was and I left it out of my skin routine. My skin was always flaky around my nose which caused more spots due to blocking my pores. When I finally started exfoliating, it took me a good year to find the right scrub for me. Now, I exfoliate usually once every week. List compelled by GingerFox.

3. Moisturising

To be honest, the first time I read about moisturising oily skin, I was skeptical. I mean- my skin was oily enough without adding anything else into the mix! However I was completely wrong. As I have sensitive skin I use simple light moisturiser, and it works wonders for me.

Another option here- to avoid any chemicals contained within conventional moisturisers- is to use Argan Oil. The first day I tried this, it felt strange. But after a few minutes it soaks right in and it is really nice. I also add in tea tree oil to mine because it has anti-bacterial properties.

4. Face Masks

Face masks are an essential part of any good skincare routine- however they are often forgotten. I recommend using a face mask once a week if possible, to provide a deep cleanse that may not be achieved with your every day face wash and make-up removers.

5. Diet

Diet is a big part of having healthy skin, because if you don’t look after yourself inside- your body won’t be healthy on the outside. Foods such as nuts and fish are good for skin because they contain essential vitamins.

Taking about nuts, I have concocted for you a lovely and amazing almond milk recipe that will make your skin glow naturally.

6. Drink Water

Drinking water is one of the best ways to rid your body of toxins. It is recommended to drink 8 glasses of water each day (2 litres).

21 Ways to Drink Water

If you aren’t keen on the taste of water- try adding in some fruit to it to give it some flavour. Lemon water is a brilliant way to cleanse your body and if you drink it first thing in the morning- it can help to kick start your metabolism.

PS – You can also drink lemon water.

7. Primer

The first time I wore make-up, nobody told me about using primer. It wasn’t until last year that I decided to give it a go. If you haven’t used primer before- you should.

It basically provides a barrier on your skin and stops foundation soaking into your pores and causing blockages. It also makes your make-up go on a lot further.

8. Sun care

I can’t urge this strongly enough: look after your skin when you go out in the sun. Not only can your skin become badly burnt, but you can end up with age spots and even cancer.

Sunrise | OrganicIsBeautiful
Sunrise | OrganicIsBeautiful

It is really important to wear sun lotion before you go out into the sun and also apply after sun when you come back inside to stop your skin from drying out. Another point is that when you sweat- your pores get blocked and this can cause spots- so make sure you wash your body well. The benzoin could also be a good alternative to protect your skin daytime.

How to Pamper Yourself At Home &…Naturally! (Promised, it doesn’t have to be complicated)

Walking into a health food or vitamin store is an exercise in overwhelm. And googling what you’re trying to find out can be even worse! Peppermint, rosemary, lavender…you name it!

As me, there’s a good chance that you’ve also purchased herbal teas, extracts or salves for a cold or a minor first aid situation. Wouldn’t it be awesome to make those same herbal remedies yourself? With drastic decisions come drastic measures. Making the switch over to an all natural and healthier lifestyle can be overwhelming. Where do you start?

Coconut Oil, my number One oil. Picture Credit: Google Image.
Coconut Oil, my number One oil.

Here are 5 steps to make that easier for you. List compelled by Pure & Simple.

1- Eliminate chemicals in your foods

This one is the most important (that’s why it’s number 1!). If you only take away one thing from this, take this: everything you do for your body relies on how well you are fueling it. I said for a long time that I wouldn’t be one of those crazy ladies in the grocery store who stands at every section for hours and hours and reads all the labels. Want to know a secret? That is me now! Now, I understand you might not know what every ingredient is, so this might stress you out, but relax! A general rule of thumb: if you don’t recognize the ingredient or if it is a mile long, just don’t get it. The longer the label, the more of a chance there is for chemicals to be in it.

Here are some of the 10 most common chemicals to avoid if you are new to label reading:

  • High Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Yellow dye
  • Red dye
  • Blue lake
  • TBHQ
  • MSG (also called monosodium glutamate)
  • BHT and BHA
  • Sodium Nitrate
  • Aspartame
  • Sucralose

Note: of course, this is not a complete list, but this should help you get started!

2- Cut out sugary drinks

One of the mistakes people make is feeling as if they are drinking enough because they are always sipping on something, but rarely is it water. I make an effort to have 1 gallon of WATER every day. Anything else has to be in addition to that. Alternatively, you can kick start your day with the extra energy from drinking lemon water. A tumeric latter will do to [Recipe here]. Here are some things to consider:

  • Store bought fruit juices are usually loaded with sugar
  • Soda is junk. Don’t drink it.
  • If you are a coffee drinker, keep in mind how much sugar you are consuming with each cup. I’m a big starbucks girl so this one applies to me.

3- Exercice in the morning

If you are just getting into a healthy routine, this one should help you out. For me, when I exercise in the morning it is great motivation to continue being healthy for the remainder of the day. If I save my workout until the end of the day, I have a longer period of time to come up with an excuse to not workout at all.

4- Get yourself a basic starter kit of essential oils

If you are looking to make any all natural products to avoid chemicals and save money, there are some essential oils that are…well, essential. If you are looking to start smaller, here are 5 essential oils I would recommend for you:

  • Peppermint
  • Lavender
  • Thieves
  • Tea tree
  • Lemon

5- Stock your cabinets with the basics

There are so many natural medicine products that you will find yourself using more and more as you continue on this path. Here are my 5 favorites:

Argan oil and Coconut oil are both a must have. Because there are both highly versatile, nutritious for both your skin collagen and your hair scalp. As well as easy to implement on your daily routine like I do here. Talking about your hair strength, coconut oil is ideal base of Pre – shampoo or as a combination with Shikakai powder. India is home to traditinal Ayurveda medecine that I have discovred living here in Malaysia. Little India is two stops away from my home. How convenient is that 😉

Shikakai Powder acts as a natural astringent for hair enhancing its binding properties naturally.

Not sure what to do with Shikakai? Recall my tutorial on how to use Amla and Shikakai for your hair. Link below

Apple Cider Vinegar is always handy to have at home. It naturally fights against wrinkles and keep your skin elasticity uniform. I personally love it and pamper myself with it on Saturday [Happy Saturday | Pamper Yourself]

And, the last, but not the least is Honey.
This all-natural ingredient is good for so much more than sweetening up your tea or coffee. Honey is actually a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the air into the skin and ensures it’s retained it in the layers where it’s needed most for penetrating, long-lasting hydration.

Well there you have it. 5 steps to help you get started. I know it can be intimidating, but don’t give up. I speak from experience when I say it is WELL worth it.

Happy health, everyone!

Amanda 😉
