Nuts or Insects

We all know that nuts can offer a number of health benefits and nutritional credentials. Although they may be packed with ample amounts of fiber protein and essential fats don’t you get tired of the same thing and will to try something new and completely different? If you answer yes then right here I have your solution, why not find the “I’m a celebrity” within you and replace the nuts with some edible insects.

If you are like me then my initial reaction to anyone who even entertained the idea would be to shake my head in complete and utter disgust. However, I am one who believes in the notion of don’t knock it until you tried it so I went against my initial reaction and gave it a go.

Although there are a large number of edible insect, below are a list of four of the main ones I tried and a few details about them to see if I can persuade you to give it a try.

What to eat

I wanted a fairly easy introduction to edible insects and so I chose the following:

  • Crickets and Grasshoppers
  • Ants
  • Scorpions
  • Centipedes
  • Crickets and Grasshoppers – Contain a high ratio of protein in comparison to their size and also contain calcium. These insects can be eaten raw or cooked. One important point to remember is that the wings and legs are not known to have any nutritional benefit so no need for you to consume those parts as well
  • Ants – Although most ants are edible you will need to be cautious as not all of them are too friendly and they may just bite back. In comparison to other insects, the nutritional value may not be that great. Ants are however a very quick and easily sourced edible option if required.
  • Centipedes – As with other insects, it is also safe for you to eat a centipede. Usually, they require you to cook them to ensure any venom breaks down. Eating a centipede can provide you with protein, vitamins and vital minerals that have more nutritional value than certain salads.
  • Scorpions – Scorpion contains valuable nutritional content with the provision of protein, fat, mineral, and energy. Although safe to eat it is advised that prior to consuming scorpion a number of processing methods are adopted for example you should remove the tail as it could be venomous.

Would I really eat an insect?

If you are anything like me I was somewhat skeptical about eating insects until someone once said to me you just might have to. I personally wouldn’t eat insects out of choice, but there may be a few occasions in mind where it may just be a necessity such as:

  • Nutritional benefits if other sources become unavailable
  • Could be a means of survival
  • Unusual flavor and textures for those wanting to try something new
  • They can be easily obtained on a large scale

So If I haven’t managed to persuade you to try edible insects for the nutritional benefits at the very least do your research as one day you never know you may just need to try them! would you be brave enough? 😉
