Essential oils can be much more powerful than you anticipate. I recalled my first DIY recipe using essential oils did not go as planned! Safety should be first priority, while dealing with such hazardous substances.
I’ve created this safety guide in order to help you deal with essential oils. Read through and feel free to feel the blank in the comment area 😉
Including myself many have incorporated essential oil in the daily life. They are highly concentrated liquid; it is not carefully used can cause great harm. The essential oil with respect and follow me on this guide on how to safely use essential oils.
1-Never use any essential oil undiluted
The Rule number 1 is to NEVER use undiluted essential oil directly on your skin.
And this apply to whichever one you use, either lavender oil, tea tree oil or any other essential oil. Why? If abused it can be very harmful for your skin and even may leave a permanent damage, you may not see any damage to soon but in the long run there can be. So just avoid that risk!
2- Some essential oil may have an allergic reaction to your skin
So before you try essential oil on your face or your hands, just test it on a small patch of skin. Most preferably on your thighs.
3- Do a proper research before you start using essential oil.
Some essential oils need to be totally avoided by pregnant women and those with problems skin is. Patients suffering from diseases like asthma, epilepsy or other similar condition should also choose essential oils carefully.
Some essentials are also sensitive to sun exposure, lemon, lemongrass, grapefruit to name a few!
4 – Do not use essential oils in excess, when it comes to using it the less is more.
Essential oils are extremely concentrated liquid only one or two drops is what all you need. When I started using essential oil, I was using it to much and in no time I was facing the consequences. So using essential oils in excess is a big no!!
5- Never allow children to use essential oils without their parents knowledge.
As mentioned above, using essential oil in DIY recipe the wrong way can lead to unexpected risk to your skin. Make sure to keep essential oil from unsafe hands. There have been many cases where children consumed essential oil, you definitely don’t want to end up in such a situation.
6- Never take essential oils internally without any prior knowledge.
Consult and do a research before you take them internally. Start by OiB, read thought more, and if any question, feel free to leave a comment below, I usually answer within few hours (Bare in mind our time different may be different, I am in Kuala lumpur).
Essential oils are highly concentrated is and should not be taken in without any proper understanding of it. Essential oils may be derived from direct from various food products like black pepper, lemon, clove, orange etc but it doesn’t mean that there must be taken internally. I am not saying that you shouldn’t, but you definitely need to do a proper research.
NOTE: Essential oils can be extremely flammable keep them away from any fire hazards
I think I have covered enough precautions before you start using essential oil. They are great product to include in your daily life but you definitely need to be careful. If you have any queries, please leave a comment and let me know.
Thank you for reading OiB, let’s all be caution and use aromatherapy the right way 😉
…it was a real discovery. I assume most of you would have heard about acupuncture by now, yes you know the one, that treatment where you have pins stuck into your body. You must be asking yourself “now where’s the appeal in that?”
When I came to try it for the first time I went to the session underprepared with a friend (the one in the header picture). Traditional Chinese Medicine is highly regarded here in Malaysia.
It was very easy to find a suitable healing and relaxation centre just a few street away from my home in Kuala Lumpur, right in China town. To be honest with you, we were both a little naïve and with only a minimal view of what to expect.
That’s why I am here to help you out and give you a few key pointers about how to prepare for your first session.
My first visit was full of little surprises and one of the main things I learned was the various different styles and techniques of acupuncture that were available.
Having an awareness and knowledge of what to expect will hopefully give you that little bit of confidence to go and try it out and ease your mind of those posing questions to ensure there are no surprises when you go and give Acupuncture a whirl. 😉
∴The main “need to knows”
So before you got to your first session there are a few things you just need to know:
We’ve all done it, felt a bit off colour or sick and then cancelled an appointment. Acupuncture can actually treat more than pain and can even be used to treat your annoying cold or stomach bug or even further medical conditions such as stress or other types of disorders.
You should always eat and never make the mistake of attending an acupuncture session on an empty stomach. Eating prior to treatment, even if only a small snack helps ensure the body has enough energy. This is known to assist in acupunctures treatment potential. If you don’t eat you may experience dizzy spells or feel light headed.
If your thoughts were anything like mine, I was always under the impression that you had to remove your close for acupuncture, just like you would for a massage. This is not the case.
Although Acupuncturists obviously have to access areas under your clothes they intend to ensure that skin is exposed in small portions. Loose clothing is always a good idea.
When I went for my first Acupuncture I was asked a number of what could be in the views of some people awkward or embarrassing questions. Do not be alarmed this is just a simple way for the Acupuncturists to find out more about you your health and lifestyle and what you hope to achieve from taking part in the treatment.
∴ The equipment really isn’t that scary
By my own admissions I take hygiene very seriously and one of my initial concerns was to do with the equipment used.
I had no reason to worry:
Acupuncture needles are not the same as hypodermic ones they are thinner and more flexible
Needles are not reused
Needles are not the only equipment there is other equipment or techniques
Quite often one treatment is not sufficient and further sessions may be required
∴How did I feel?
My first session of Acupuncture left me feeling totally relaxed, invigorated and to an extent relieved of some of my pains. I would describe Acupuncture as a pleasurable and easily tolerable pain that after every session left me feeling ecstatic.
So now I have settled your concerns all that is left to do is for you to give it a try. I assure you that once you have tried it you will only want more. Go and see for yourself and you’ll feel that relaxed it will be as if you are walking with one foot off the ground.
I love when my home feels cosy and smells like a flower. How to do so naturally, myself and without hurting my budget? OiB has the answer 😉 It is in itself a very simple and effective method to begin to diffuse essential oils around your home. It requires no specific instrument – just a non-scented candle and an essential oil of your choice.
In summary, light your non-scented candle and allow to burn for a few minutes or until a pool of melted wax forms. Add two or three drops of your favorite essential oil. Within seconds the beautiful aroma will start to spread around the room. Thank you ThehomemadeExperiement for compelling the tutorial and pictures below.
∴ What You Need.
And your best happy face 😉
∴ The Tutorial
STEP 1 – MELT THE WAX
Light your votive candle and let the wax melt as much as possible. It took my votive candle 30 minutes to get good and melted.
Just keep an eye on your candle and when it looks something like the picture on the right, you’re good to go.
STEP 2 –BLOW IT OUT
After the wax has mostly melted blow out the candle. This is very important as essential oils can be very flammable when they come into direct contact with flame.
A Warning: Be extremely careful, and follow my instructions closely. Some essential oils are very flammable and should never come into contact with an open flame in their pure form. As an example, my pine essential oil immediately burst into flame when added to a burning candle. I lost a few hairs figuring that one out.
STEP 3 – Add 5-8 Drops Essential Oil
Add between 5-8 drops of essential oil to the votive candle. For mine I used peppermint essential oil. As with most essential oil things use as much or as little as you like.
Because the wax is very hot the essential oil will heat up and disperse evenly into the wax.
It might take some trial and error to find essential oils that will work well for this. I tried doing the same thing with pine essential oil and all I got for that effort was a little bit of a burning smell. I’m not quit sure what the difference is chemically between the two, but my peppermint essential oil works just fine for this.
STEP 4 – MIX
You can give the candle a little, I mean very small, jiggle if you want to help the essential oils mix into the wax. Be careful not to slosh the wax though, I don’t want you to burn yourself.
STEP 5 – LIGHT IT UP
That’s it, now you can safely relight your votive candle, and you’ve got a quick and easy scented candle without having to make your own from scratch.
– HOW’S IT WORK –
I think that this diy scented candle trick works great. It’s not as good as a really nice scented candle, but it does the trick. Right now my little votive candle is filling my living room with the smell of peppermint and that’s just what I wanted it to do.
