The Greatness of Grains

The Greatness of Grains -
The Greatness of Grains –

Carbs! I love carbs. How about you, OiB readers? Surely, you have heard some media discrediting the greatness of grains throughout the years. Namely, people like to say that too many carbohydrates are bad for you and make you gain weight. Today, I would like to counter that superstition and fill you on why you need grains.

But not just any type of grain will work. You need to consume unprocessed (not refined) whole grains.

What is a Whole Grain?

All grains, according to the Whole Grain Council, begin whole. Whole grains are, basically, the entire seed of a plant, made up of three edible parts—the bran, germ, and endosperm.

The barn is a multi-layered outer shell that has antioxidants, essential B vitamins, and plenty of dietary fiber.

The germ is the potential new sprout. Here, you find more B vitamins, some protein, minerals, and healthy fats.

Lastly, the endosperm is the energy supply of the germ. Contained in the endosperm are carbohydrates, proteins, and trace amounts of other nutrients.

What Makes Grains “White”?

When whole grains are stripped of some key parts—the bran, germ, or endosperm—they become refined or processed. White flour and white rice, for example, have had the bran and germ removed, leaving only the starchy endosperm behind.

Why Are Whole Grains Healthier?

That is the main question here, is it not? Obviously, whole grains have a lot of vitamins and nutrients than refined grains do, but these are not the main reason why you need them in your diet.

Starches throw your blood sugar out of whack. Whole grain carbohydrates do not have the same effect. Whole grains are slowly absorbed and metabolized, meaning that blood sugar stays level. Also, whole grains are known to reduce the onset of heart disease.

In fact, a recent 2016 study proved that whole grains are linked to a longer lifespan. The meta-analysis was comprised of 14 studies and found that eating 3 servings of whole grains a day was “associated with a 25 percent lower risk of death from heart disease, and a 14 percent lower risk of death from cancer”.

Types of Bananas

The Different Types of Bananas

The Different Types of Bananas -
The Different Types of Bananas –

Today on OiB I will take about the different types of bananas. Yes, that is true. There are many types of bananas and people have been asking me for the same very recently. So if you are also among those who have been asking me for the same. Your request is here now.

There are more than 1000 types of bananas. They also have their own categories which are actually about 50. These varieties might not be known by many people but they surely do exist. A banana is by far the most popular and common eaten fruit of the whole world. It is also taken as a fruit besides being taken as an herb too.

Cavendish Bananas
When it comes to the export market, the Cavendish variety is the best one produced. It is made in quantities of about 105 million tons each year. They are used in many desserts and also contribute to a lot of profits for countries in the South.

Plantain Bananas
These bananas are also known as cooking bananas. They make up for 45 million tones. These can be consumed locally. They are found in many tropical countries. They are also the best alternatives for potatoes and rice in different cuisines in cheaper countries because of their low cost.

Baby bananas
These are the most cute and adorable fun size bananas that are given by Chiquita. They are almost half the size of the normal Cavendish bananas and are true snacks for all. Their skin is deep brown with darker streaks on it.

Manzano Bananas
This variety of bananas belongs to the Central America and South America. They are also known as Apple bananas. They have a very strong tart-apple smell while they are also firmer in comparison. It is sweet in taste and is also found easily in Asian markets

Red Bananas
I personally like these bananas because they are very delicious of the above all. They are found in the US and have a very creamy texture and sweet taste. A red ripe banana is the one which is a bit in the darker shade of magenta. It is also confused in Philippines with their staple called Lacatan.

Burro Bananas
They are also known as chunky bananas in general. This is because they are fatter and more in size than the normal Cavendish bananas found regularly. It is mostly grown in Mexico but is also found in America as well. This type of banana should be ripened well throughout. It has a yellow skin and a greatly balanced sweet as well as sour taste. In other words, it is just like something in between a banana cream pie and a lemon meringue pie.

Apple Bananas
This type of banana is also known as the candy apple banana. It is often found in Hawaii while the firm flesh of the banana is pink in color. It doesn’t brown quickly which is why I prefer using them in different fruit salads overall.

Lady Finger Bananas
These are smaller but longer types of bananas that are sweeter than the Cavendish ones. They can be used in the same way though.

There are also many other types of bananas. If you know any of them and have tried out a recipe with them. Feel free to share in the comments below!

Raspberry + Elderberry = Skin Energiser

Today on OiB I will teach you a very interesting recipe using raspberry and elderberry. You could call it a fruit juice or a jam. Just the thickness varies, that is all. Depending on the amounts of water and sugar, you add, you have either a fruit juice or jam.

I have tried it and it proved to be an instant skin energizer. For all you women out there, who feel that their skin is slightly on the dull side, will want to check this DIY recipe out.

The elderberry bush is a popular nature berry that can be found in several regions in the United States of America and Canada. They usually grow in cool areas. You can find the berries growing on their tress during the months of August and October.

The white flowers are something to see, really they are amazing. The tiny black fruit provides abundance of juice for such a small looking fruit. Don’t directly eat the fruits because they are extremely powerful, which is why little cooking is required before you pop them in your mouth.

Cinnamon in Skincare

These berries are ideal for making sauces, wines, and jams. And jams are my personal favorite. The berries are very good for skin and come with several other health properties like they cure a bad stomach and even come with anti cancer properties.

  • A cup of raspberries
  • A cup of elderberries

  • Step1

You will need to wash the elderberries and raspberries. This helps in getting rid of the stalks which are present on them. Instead of using your fingers, you can make use of a fork. Now, you will want to place the berries in a hot pan.

  • Step2

As you are cooking the berries, start to mash them. Once you are done mashing, you can pour them into the muslin. Leave the items overnight in the refrigerator. Next day morning all you need to do is measure the juice in the bowl and boil in a cleaned pan. You will then want to pour into warm jars.

  • Step3

When preparing a sauce or syrup, you need to dissolve the honey in warm water and then put it inside the refrigerator. You are done. Wasn’t it simple?

As you can see, it is not that difficult to prepare and make. Just make sure that you have kept all the ingredients ready beforehand so that you and start mixing it right away. I can’t tell you how yummy and tantalizing it was when I first had it.

It is always a special moment when you taste what you have so lovingly made. Trust me this drink is not like your other fruit drinks.

This one just takes it to another level.

Just one thing dear, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding your child, you will want to wait for few months.

Isn’t organic food good for skincare?

Tired of Nuts! What About Edible Insects?

Tired of nuts! What about edible insects? –

Nuts or Insects

We all know that nuts can offer a number of health benefits and nutritional credentials. Although they may be packed with ample amounts of fiber protein and essential fats don’t you get tired of the same thing and will to try something new and completely different? If you answer yes then right here I have your solution, why not find the “I’m a celebrity” within you and replace the nuts with some edible insects.

If you are like me then my initial reaction to anyone who even entertained the idea would be to shake my head in complete and utter disgust. However, I am one who believes in the notion of don’t knock it until you tried it so I went against my initial reaction and gave it a go.

Although there are a large number of edible insect, below are a list of four of the main ones I tried and a few details about them to see if I can persuade you to give it a try.

What to eat

I wanted a fairly easy introduction to edible insects and so I chose the following:

  • Crickets and Grasshoppers
  • Ants
  • Scorpions
  • Centipedes
  • Crickets and Grasshoppers – Contain a high ratio of protein in comparison to their size and also contain calcium. These insects can be eaten raw or cooked. One important point to remember is that the wings and legs are not known to have any nutritional benefit so no need for you to consume those parts as well
  • Ants – Although most ants are edible you will need to be cautious as not all of them are too friendly and they may just bite back. In comparison to other insects, the nutritional value may not be that great. Ants are however a very quick and easily sourced edible option if required.
  • Centipedes – As with other insects, it is also safe for you to eat a centipede. Usually, they require you to cook them to ensure any venom breaks down. Eating a centipede can provide you with protein, vitamins and vital minerals that have more nutritional value than certain salads.
  • Scorpions – Scorpion contains valuable nutritional content with the provision of protein, fat, mineral, and energy. Although safe to eat it is advised that prior to consuming scorpion a number of processing methods are adopted for example you should remove the tail as it could be venomous.

Would I really eat an insect?

If you are anything like me I was somewhat skeptical about eating insects until someone once said to me you just might have to. I personally wouldn’t eat insects out of choice, but there may be a few occasions in mind where it may just be a necessity such as:

  • Nutritional benefits if other sources become unavailable
  • Could be a means of survival
  • Unusual flavor and textures for those wanting to try something new
  • They can be easily obtained on a large scale

So If I haven’t managed to persuade you to try edible insects for the nutritional benefits at the very least do your research as one day you never know you may just need to try them! would you be brave enough? 😉
