What’s the deal with Salads anyway? Some people adore salads whereas some despise them. I would say that after potato chips salad is the most popular item in restaurants all over the world. That’s why Today on OiB I will enlighten you with the different types of salads and how you can make them creative and tasty in a healthy way.

By definition a salad is strictly speaking a combination of meat, vegetables, fruit, nuts or cheese either cooked or raw and served with any dressing or dip.

Now that we’re clear with what a Salad actually is; let’s focus on the different varieties of salads you can find in functions, events, parties and family dinners.

  1. Green Salad: The most common type of salad which can be found in restaurants all over the world. Lettuce is the main ingredient in this salad – after that you can add vegetables, meat, fish, nuts or eggs to complement the taste and nutrients. This type of salad is typically topped with mayonnaise or oil based vinegar.
  2. Vegetable Salad: As the name states, this type of salad mostly consists of blanched vegetables along with cheese and nuts. Occasionally fruit may also be added. But, a sauce or dressing is a must as it helps in combining all the flavors together.
  3. Mixed Green Salads: This salad is a mixture of numerous types of lettuces. Some varieties are sweet whereas others can be bit sour. The dressing of vinaigrette is usually prefereed as it helps in releasing the flavors of lettuces.
  4. Fruit Salads: This type of salad is my personal favorite because it is super tasty and you can eat it any time of the day you want without any hassle. As the name states, this salad strictly comprises of fruits (either canned or seasonal) and sometimes whipped cream can be added for extra facor.
  5. Seafood Salads: Just ask your relatives or friends living away from rivers or sea and they will tell you of how much they crave for fresh and tasty seafood. Adding flakes of a freshly caught fish into a green salad can do wonders because the taste is just extraordinary. Oh, and fish is extremely healthy and good for your health.
  6. Complete Meal Salads: If you have left-over meat from yesterday’s dinner don’t just throw it away. Instead, add some eggs, cheese and vegetables in it and voila! You have got yourself a meal salad. The Italians have been doing this since centuries and they call it the antipasto salad. Pasta Salads: Last but not the least is the pasta salad which is getting increasingly popular as the days pass by. You can make this a great starter for your BBQ parties and family dinners.

Here is worth mentioning that for a dish to be called a SALAD. It has to have at least 2 or more than two ingredients.

In the end, I would like to say that don’t restrict your creativity and try creating new types of salad combinations using the left-over items in your fridge or by using premium seasonal fruits or vegetables. Also, I would love to hear out any WOW salad recipes from you guys so go ahead and surprise us with your unique salad recipe.

Stop in Singapore | OrganicIsBeautifulEthnic quarters:

While exploring the city of Singapore, I encountered such quarters:

  1. Little India: From a distance, I could hear Hindi songs being played in a loudspeaker. I was astonished, thinking why was it played in a loudspeaker in Singapore. I walked towards the sound and suddenly the buildings, shops, streets, people and the overall aura of the place changed. I found myself in Little India. I saw shops selling brass jewelry and beautiful colorful sarees. I had delicious Indian cuisine which included roti, daal, crisp potatoes and chicken curry. I experienced India in this beautiful country.
  2. Chinatown: I was excited when I saw yet another country’s quarter in Singapore. I tried the Chinese cuisine. I had the delicious Tian Tian rice and oyster pancakes. I learnt kite making from a vendor there. I wore colorful masks too fully immersing myself in the culture. I also visited the Thiang Hock Keng temple. I loved the intricate designs, elaborately painted doors and the typical Chinese style structure. It felt as if I was transported to China.

Night Safari:

This is one of the most exciting things to do in Singapore. The Night Safari was a special experience for me because this was the first time I was exploring the zoo at night and that too in a tram. I saw quite a few animals such as lions, tigers, hippos etc. The darkness of the night makes it a thrilling and unique experience. One should must experience this especially with their family.

Camping in a deserted island:

This is the most thrilling and memorable experience in Singapore. It is not covered in most of the tourist’s itineraries. There is Kusu and St. John’s islands which are further afield and are accessible by ferry. I went to the St. John’s Island. I took my own food and water as there are no restaurants on the island. The beach of the island is mesmerising and fresh. I had sea bath and made barbeques. Then I spent the whole night star gazing on the beach. The night time had an enigmatic beauty. The twinkling stars adorned the night sky and the whole beach was glistening with silvery moonlight. I was there enjoying every moment to the fullest and adoring the elegance of the Singapore skyline visible from there.

Sentosa Island:

This island is rightly called the state of fun with a huge Merlion sitting on it. There are many thing which can be done there. Some of the best are:

  1. Underwater World: I step on the escalator and it takes me through a huge underground aquarium covering me from three sides having a large variety of sea fishes such as myriads of jellyfishes, rays, sharks and much more. I was astonished to see such a huge variety of fishes. The humongous aquarium had Open Ocean habitat, which made me feel if I am on the cavernous ocean floor!
  2. Songs of the Sea: This is my best experience on Sentosa Island. The world famous laser show happens on the sea side. A beautiful story is shown through laser lights on the water is truly awe inspiring and fun to watch. The dancing lights and the spraying water blend together to form a great entertainment for tourists.
  3. Beaches: Sentosa Islands also offers beautiful beaches.

  4. Tanjong beach: This is an ideal beach for people looking for tranquility and peace. It is the romantic beach. The tranquil atmosphere provides relaxation and is away from the hustle bustle of the city.
  5. Siloso Beach: When I went to this beach, it was polar opposite of the Tanjong beach. There is excitement all over the beach. I played volleyball here with random people and made some new friends. Amazing places to eat and bars can be found here. In the night, this beach is wide awake partying. I thoroughly enjoyed the night culture of this beach, thanks to the quality live music being played, good alcohol and wonderful food by the sea shore.

Nightlife:

Singapore has a vibrant and sophisticated nightlife. Some of the best are:

  1. 1-Altitude Gallery & Bar: This is the first thing that comes to my mind. The bar is on the 63rd floor and provides a beautiful view of the city. I found the place very sophisticated and the service was great. Food and booze are of top quality. After traveling for the whole day, I went there at 8 and even though it got late for me but I did not feel like leaving the place. I loved the ambience and one could just stare at the scintillating city forever.
  2. Zouk: I love dance music and Zouk turned out to be a heaven to me. This awarding-winning venue has been at the forefront of the club scene in the city for over two decades. The crowd here mainly consisted of the youngsters. I danced my way through the night having the time of my life. The feeling was ecstatic. It is a must go club for dance loving people.

The nightlife of Singapore has something in store for everyone. The night never gets boring here. Excitement levels touch the sky with electrifying bars, pubs and discos. The perfect blend of beaches, nightlife, entertainment, adventure and fun filled activities makes Singapore one of the most attractive countries in the world.

How to cook Edamame at Home

TheKitchn lists 5 different and very simple way to master the Edamame cuisine. I personally eat it raw here in Kuala Lumpur, usually in Japanese restaurant. Written this article, I am curious to know how Malaysian – beside the famous local samba and rice –  incorporates Edamame in their own cooking tradition.

  • Straight up, with salt – Did you know that edamame isn’t just a sushi restaurant appetizer? It’s easily made at home, too. We like to buy bags of frozen, steamed edamame in their pods and just warm it up. Peel and eat!
  • With rice – Edamame beans, shelled from their pods, make a quick and delicious supper. Rice is absolutely everywhere in Asia, some of my workmates eat it for breakfast! Back in 2012, when I was intern in China, I even discovered the black rice (delicious btw).

  • Stir-fried – You can do many things with those tender little green beans, once they’ve been slit out of their pods, and stir-frying is another great option. Throw into some leftover rice with an egg and quickly stir-fry until hot.
  • In a bean salad – Edamame is also great in tossed bean salads, like this Three Bean Salad with cumin, garlic, lime juice, and black-eyed peas.
  • Pureed in a dip – Here’s a great way to make a party dip that’s healthy but still full of lively and bright flavors: puree edamame beans with lemon, mint, and cheese into a great snack dip.

Never Be Denied

If something stands between you and your success, move it. Never be denied. –Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

Starting with a quote a post is unusual for me, unless its the perfect fit. Chances are you’ve been there before. Across from a woman in a dress that costs more than you’re unemployed tush can hope to make in a month, or on the very distant end of an I’m-not-interested text message. It’s hideous, unfriendly and usually has bad table manners.

It’s called rejection. Unpleasant I know.

Never Be Denied | OrganicIsBeautiful
Never Be Denied | OrganicIsBeautiful

After sometimes, I learnt to know and trust that everything will turn out Ok. Regardless of the situation. It takes a lot of energy to stay postive and grateful to what you have. Blogging obviously helps…or kind of. Personally, beside the learning experience, OiB content mirrors my personality, a happy mood. I am grateful that my little life in Asia since I left uni 4 years ago has turned out Ok. By Ok, I mean, yes, you come across some weird situations and behaviour, coupled with cliche and ignorance…Rejection. On both side.

What the sentence says again? “The grass is always greener on the other side”. We all heard it, and felt for its naivety, you and me.

Today, standing with my 3yrs plus in Asia, standing as a 3month old blogger and a lifetime free spirit, I will quote Bob Marley, the precursor. Bob Marley song says. Don’t worry. Everything is gonna be all right.

Wishing you all an awesome day,

Amanda 😉
