A lot of hubbub has been going around recently about coconut oil pulling, so it made me curious. After doing some reading, I was pretty amazed by the effects of coconut oil on oral health. So today on OiB, I would like to introduce the awesomeness of coconut oil, because you might be skeptical about this trend like I was once.

What is Oil Pulling? 

As explained on WebMD, oil pulling is a “type of Ayurvedic medicine that dates back 3,000 years… [that] involves swishing approximately 1 tablespoon of oil—typically coconut, sesame, or sunflower oil—in your mouth for about 20 minutes and then spitting it out.” The idea behind oil pulling is that the oils detoxify the oral cavity by drawing out toxins to create a clean, antiseptic environment.

I know what you are thinking. That sounds kind of like pseudo-science. But, recent studies have proven that oil pulling has many benefits.

Benefits of Oil Pulling 

A study in 2015 looked into the benefits of coconut oil pulling and the effects it has on plaque-related gingivitis. At the end of the 30 day period where the participants swished coconut oil, the results showed a “statistically significant decrease in the plaque and gingival indices” that was noted since day 7. The “scores continued to decrease during the period of study,” reports the head researcher.

The Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine published a full report on oil pulling in 2016 that details the following benefits:

  • Prevents dental cavities
  • Improves overall oral hygiene
  • Decreases oral microbial count (the lauric acid in coconut oil is great for this)
  • Reduces the stickiness of plaque
  • Reduces gingivitis
  • Decreases halitosis (bad breath)
  • Swishing strengthens the mouth and jaw muscles
  • Whitens teeth

Pretty cool, right? After reading the the studies, I could not wait to try it.

How To Pull Oil 

Okay, first, let me just say that while 20 minutes of swishing is how the ancients did it, you do not have to. Next, remember to buy organic, non-GMO coconut oil for maximum results.

Here is how I like to do oil pulling:

  1. Pour 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil into your mouth (either with a spoon or from a medicine cup). Some people recommendto dothis right in the morning before drinking or eating, but I say whenever it works best for you.
  2. Swish for 5-20 minutes. Because 20 minutes is a long time, aim for around 10 minutes to receive the benefit.
  3. Go slow. Gentle swishing and sucking the oil through and around the teeth is all you need.
  4. Do not swallow. Spit the oil out in atrash can. Never spit it down the sink, because the oil will clog the pipes.
  5. Immediately rinse your mouth out with same warm sea salt water.
  6. Brush and floss as normal.

Final Thoughts 

I was skeptical about coconut oil pulling at first, but I am astounded by the results. That is why I wanted to share my thoughts and findings with you today on OiB. If you have tried coconut oil pulling before, feel free to share your experiences!

I used to hate coffee until I landed in Melbourne last week

Melbourne was transformed in the 1850’s by the Victorian gold rush. Today it is Australia’s second largest city and one of fastest growing coffee capitals in the world. The city imports roughly 30 tons of coffee daily. This amounts to a staggering 3 million cups of coffee each day! That’s almost a cup for every person living in the city.

Now, I have never been a fan of coffee. Melbourne, however, changed that.

What makes Melbourne coffee so great?

You can find coffee shops scattered all over Melbourne. They vary from ultra modern upscale ones to small quaint ones hidden in the laneways of the CBD. It is clear that, here, coffee is more than just a beverage. Coffee is a culture all on its own. The atmosphere in this city is constantly humming and alive. It’s contagious. These cafés not only pride themselves on their coffee but have evolved brunch as we know it.
Food and coffee transformed into art. There is something for everyone. Any type of coffee you can imagine. Melbourne is home to many specialty coffee blends and many cafes have in-house roasted beans. This coffee is real, fresh, coffee. And the aroma alone is enough to entice me.

The best coffee spots in Melbourne

  • Auction roomsSituated in North Melbourne on 103 – 107 Errol St, Auction Rooms is a lovely rustic Café with a beautiful courtyard. Their coffee is truly sensational. Their white espresso with almond milk is heavenly. And their food in right on par. The menu is full of amazing dishes with flavor combinations that will melt your senses. They source seasonal produce and only stock free range pork and eggs.
  • Twenty & Six 594 Queensberry-street, North Melbourne. Twenty & Six make a version of ice coffee that may have single-handedly changed my opinion on ice coffee forever. They start by making a Horchata (a chai alternative made with rice, almonds, cinnamon and maple). Then, to the chilled Horchata, they add a shot of espresso. It is simply delicious and great for people who aren’t big coffee drinkers. Twenty & Six make good simple foods. There are daily muffins to choose from or you could choose their innovative takeaway lunch box. The lunch box is usually made up of soup, salad, and a sandwich but the ingredients change weekly. I told you Melbourne has transformed both coffee and food. Twenty & Six is all the proof you’ll need.
  • Monk Bodhi DharmaListed number 8 on Yelp’s list of top 100 coffee shops in Australia and with good reason. The Monk Bodhi Dharma is a cozy café situated in one of the many laneways of the city. They have a fully vegetarian menu with many vegan options. Don’t let this discourage you. Their dishes are scrumptious even so. I found that out for myself when I tried their umami mushrooms on a bed of polenta. Their coffee comes in four different blends and is roasted in house. You can choose to add soy, almond or other kinds of milk. Their coffee can also be bought by the bag in the café.
  • The Kettle Black This cleverly named café is located in South Melbourne on Albert Road. It is a beautiful classic building with a lovely terrace and opens modern interior. The Kettle Black is the best known for its brunch. With decadent home-made coconut yogurt (filled with pear, seeds, nuts, fruits and flowers) on the menu, I can see why. This amazing place is vegetarian-friendly and the food is plated so gorgeously you’ll feel guilty for destroying it. To top it all off their coffee is truly excellent. A very popular spot indeed, you may find yourself waiting for a seat. However, this place is totally worth it!
  • Brother Baba Budan On 359 Little Bourne street, Brother Baba Budan is rustic industrial café. There are chairs on the ceiling and wood paneling. This cozy little place is always buzzing and often a little crowded. This is probably due to the fact that their coffee is high quality and very smooth. They have a selection of blends from Seven Seeds (specialty coffee roasters ) and these blends are constantly on rotation. They specialize in coffee and therefore have no menu. Although, they do have a selection of pastries and muffins to accompany your delicious brew.
  • PatriciaOn the corner of Little Bourke and Little William street is Patricia. Patricia also uses Seven Seeds specialty coffee. Patricia is said to serve the best coffee in the city. Making this spot a must even for coffee skeptics like myself. If you don’t like coffee a cup of this might just change your mind. There is also a range of cookies and treats to go along with your OrganicIsBeautiful Signaturecoffee. There is no seating available though as this coffee shop gem is only a takeaway stop. Not that that is a problem for its very many customers. What coffee can’t you have on the go?

Melbourne is a city in love with coffee and it’ll cast its spell on you (like it did with me). The local people and the vibe of this place are like no other in the world. This vibrant coffee culture is one you’ll love to get lost in.

Healthy Infused Water

All functions of the body require water. It’s the body’s natural purifier, replenisher and hydrator and we need lots of it to keep our bodies functioning properly. The only problem about water is it can get a little boring. And when things get boring, watch out! That’s when we start reaching for sugary drinks. I’m avoiding all that by adding Fruit-Infused Water to my daily routine. And I have to tell you, I am absolutely loving it!

I thought I would share some of the ones I have been drinking.

  • Cucumber, Mint and Lime. Slices of cucumber, slices of half a lime and sprigs of mint mixed together with water. I found this one to have the most flavour compared to others.
  • Cucumber, Lime, Strawberry and Mint. Slices of cucumber, chopped up strawberry, slices of lime and sprigs of mint.So I added strawberry, but it’s worked!
  • Lime, Ginger and Mint. Slices of lime, sprigs of mint and slices of ginger cut up. I added more ginger into this one as I found it less gingery.

  • Lime, Kiwi, Mint and Coconut Water. Slices of lime, kiwi chopped up, sprigs of mint and coconut water. I’m not a big fan of coconut water, but putting a little at the bottom topped up with water is delicious.

The “recipe” is pretty simple. Just place slices/sprigs of your favorite flavors into a pitcher or glass. Fill with water. The longer it sits, the more intense the flavor. Then, just keep refilling with water. Drink the infused water within 2 days to keep the flavors fresh. (And I try to use organic produce whenever possible)

Once you find your favorite flavors, it’s easy to get hooked! If you come to a party at my house, there is a good chance you’ll see a big pitcher of infused water on the drink table. It’s not just tasty, it’s also very pretty to look at.

I love to make a big batch and sip on it all day. Or if I’m out and about I pour some in my reusable water bottle that I always keep with me. It’s a fun way to drink water at work or on the go. So, what are you waiting for? Go get your drink on! You know what I mean…

Is More Always Less?

Minimalism has been around for awhile, it’s nothing new. The term may not be a household phrase; however, you’ll find it in media through different names.

Why I Love Avocado & You Should Too!

How to use Avocado in Your Kitchen

There are so many ways you can use this fruit. Avocados make a great snack raw with a little salt or nut cheese, are the main ingredient in guacamole, and the perfect addition to make salads decadent and filling. But they’re also quite useful in cooking.

Seared or grilled avocados are a treat! They’re also wonderful on pizzas, even instead of the cheese, and mashed or sliced into casseroles. Get started with a Caesar Salad Pizza or a Breakfast Tortilla Pesto Pizza.


Wonderful in stir fries, especially with kale and tempeh, avocado minimizes the need for oil in cooking. You can even grill or bake them before tossing them on a bed of greens for a warm, not-so-raw salad, soothing for the winter months.


Raw, blended soups are super creamy with avocado, but lighter than they would be with cashews. We love gazpacho-style cold soups with green tomatoes or cucumbers, but there are a lot more unique options, as well. Try this Raw Carrot Avocado Soup or Raw Peas and Mint Avocado Soup.

Green and fruit smoothies are wonderful with avocados, but most of all we enjoy the fluffiness of a smoothie with avos, which is why they’re so perfect for chocolate mousse. Simply, with cocoa powder, with or without bananas, a dash of sweetener, perhaps some cinnamon, and cayenne or espresso powder for zest, chocolate mousse is the perfect dessert for a health-conscious, time-pressed chocolate lover.


As an alternative to just chopping up avocados for salads, they can also be turned into a dressing for the whole salad. They even do a wonderful job of dressing up pasta and whole grains. Mix into a tahini dressing, or with lemon or cucumber. Try it on a Raw Zucchini Pasta and Creamy Avocado Cucumber Sauce and a Mesquite Avocado-Kale Salad.

In addition to guacamole, avocado can be turned into a lot of different creamy dips, like Creamy Avocado Basil Dip and even Garlic Herb Avocado Cream Cheese.
